The Numbers

Did you know that 50% of businesses at Pittsburgh Yards® are women-owned? On Women’s Entrepreneurship Day 2022, we want to recognize our entrepreneurs for their hard work as they continue to build their empires and affect change for their families, communities, and economies worldwide.

About 85% of purchases and close to $20 trillion in global spending is a credit to women. As we celebrate Women’s Entrepreneurship Day this year, we want to recognize the over 55 women entrepreneurs based at Pittsburgh Yards.

  • Between 2018 and 2019, the number of minority-owned businesses grew by 10% versus a 5% average rate for all women-owned companies.
  • Furthermore, the number of Black women-owned businesses increased at a 12% annual growth rate in 2019 compared to an 8% yearly rate in previous years.
  • Since 2014, women of color have entered the business world at rates much higher than non-minority women.
  • American Express finds that the number of non-minority women-owned businesses increased by 5.6% between 2014 and 2019.

However, during the same timeframe, the number of companies owned by minority women grew by 43%, with gains seen in all groups:

  • 50% for African American/Black
  • 41% for Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander
  • 40% for Latina/Hispanic
  • 37% for Asian American
  • 26% for Native American/Alaska Native

  • Read a book on entrepreneurship that will give you insight into how challenging it is to build a flourishing empire.
