Honoring history, building what’s next

Some stories are about more than a single organization. They’re about place, legacy, and the long work of building opportunity over time.

For nearly a century, the John A. White Golf Course has been a cornerstone of Southwest Atlanta. Opened in 1929, the public course has served generations of residents as both a recreational space and a gathering place in a predominantly African American community. It is also the longtime home of First Tee – Metro Atlanta’s youth development programs—where young people learn far more than golf.

Today, that legacy is entering a new chapter.

A recently announced joint-venture project will transform the 40-acre site with a new $25 million clubhouse and senior activity center, honoring the course’s history while expanding its role as a multi-generational community resource. The development will include Atlanta’s first dedicated senior activity center, modernized golf facilities, conference and event spaces, and enhanced programming areas that support First Tee’s character-building and leadership development work.

At Pittsburgh Yards, this story matters deeply.

First Tee – Metro Atlanta is a valued member of our community, led by Executive Director Jenae “Coach Jae” Jenkins. The organization serves more than 1,000 young people annually, focusing on confidence, resilience, mental strength, and life skills that extend well beyond the course. Their work reflects the kind of long-term, people-centered impact we aim to support every day.

We’re also proud that NAMC Atlanta, which highlighted this historic project, is part of the Pittsburgh Yards ecosystem. Their involvement underscores the importance of minority leadership, equitable development, and collaboration in shaping Atlanta’s future.

This project is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when history is respected, communities are centered, and investment is guided by purpose.

Pittsburgh Yards exists to support organizations doing exactly this kind of work—rooted in place, focused on people, and committed to building opportunity that lasts.
